Captivating is the word that comes to mind after reading The Chautauqua Belles. The author, Beth Livingston, pulls the reader into the story and keeps him/her there with picturesque words and endearing characters. Suspense and elements of surprise continue throughout the book, even to the epilogue. A wonderful story!
Loved the story of servant making good and living a new life. The awful husband of the saving woman who took in the runways made for some suspense and intrigue in the end.
I enjoyed reading this book. The characters and dialogue were well-written and the story keeps you interested. I liked the historical facts in this book. Well done, Beth Livingston.
I read The Chautauqua Bells, Tour of Mansions 1 and delighted in its brilliant work. It was a real page-turner. I like to read in bed before sleep. I often stayed awake until after midnight, because I had to discover what would happen with Rebecca and later with Patricia. My favorite character was Sadie. She was the Savior on earth always kind, helpful, good and selfless without thought for her own oppression. The author's research, brought the places in the book, vividly, into my imagination. I, probably, will never visit western New York, but I have done my own research via the internet and found it fascinating.
The Author has wonderful descriptive ability which took me right to the place and time she was writing about. I grew up in Buffalo and the memories this book brought back to mind were so vivid. I enjoyed every turn of events and the description of what it was like to have nothing and to be able to trust in God beyond any doubts was very refreshing. I was sorry to come to the end. Well done Beth Livingston. Your words captured my attention.
This is not my typical genre preference. I'm also not a huge fan of serials. This book, though! I honestly don't know what compelled me to download it. I'm certainly glad I did, though! It was sweet, clean (modest), and well-written. My only complaint is the speed with which everything happened. I realize it was necessary in order to tell such a long story, but it kind of took some of the feeling out, I think. Still, I will absolutely consider more from this series!
This is a wonderful historical fiction story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The author took great care to research the time period and the location - even the way people thought at the time. An intriguing plot with inspirational themes running through the chapters. A great read
