This was a book I pre-ordered a few months ago and I'm glad I did. I have been so wound up in request lately that I have barley had time to read anything of my own, and when I finally find the time to indulge myself, I devour it in just a few hours.There are aspects of "Whisper" that were original, and some that were a tad bit copy cattish, but thankfully, the mixture of the two made for an original plot.
Joy has a gift... she can hear everyone's thoughts. Taking the advice of her mother (who is also a Hearer) she decides to make the world a happier place by granting peoples wishes (Have a sudden urge for chocolate? No problem 1 Snickers bar coming up), but after a knock down drag out with her clunky boot wearing, black pants sporting sister, and a migraine headache that makes the apocalypse sound like a good idea, Joy's little gift suddenly flip flops from "Positive" to "Negative." What happens when you suddenly realize no one likes you? What happens when your sister decides to take your advice and runaway? And more importantly what is up with that weird loaner boy from school?
As good as this book ended (in all honesty) it started off in a funk. I almost tapped out after a few chapters because of its lack of originality, and the fact that the main character just plan annoyed me with her constant need to overanalyze and whine, but thankfully, once "Phoebe Kitanidis" got past her boring setup (the "Positive") and got to the plot (the "Negative") the book became action packed (Yes... there were bouts of grand theft auto) and enjoyable. The writing was average, leaving me nothing to really rant about in either direction, and like I said before, once the plot was established it was clean and smooth. The character development was equal all the way around and the ending was rounded off nicely.
Overall? This is probably one of the most boring reviews I've ever written. Why? Because the book was good. Not great, not horrible, their were no major editing or writing flaws, and the length was just right. Whoever knew I could be so average about a book.
There were funeral home lilies, oblivious Dads, bathroom brawls, a wasted cup of coffee, drug dealers, dread-lock induced fires, and 1 very revealing drive to Seattle.
I think it's worth the time and the cash so...Get it, Live it, Love it and pass it on.

This book is about two sisters and their gift of whispering. Joy loves the ability while Jessica hates it. It's also about their relationship with their parents. There are some good twists in the story that keep you plenty interested. I had no problem finishing the book and there were no boring parts.
Good reading fun topic
Kept me hooked all the way through. I was captivated with the rollercoaster of emtions. From Happy to Nervousness to Frustration all the to the Jealousy, Shame, Rage then Trust, Relief, Understanding and Love. I was in! HOOK, LINE ANDROID SINKER!
I am pretty far outside the core audience for Whisper, being neither a teenager nor a YA fiction enthusiast, so I was surprised at how well and how quickly it charmed me. I am drawn to fiction that features flawed characters who grow and change in the course of reading, and Whisper has them in spades. It never panders or talks down to its readers (a must-have for books for teenagers in my opinion), and the pacing is spot on, building up steam to a rapid-fire, highly satisfying conclusion. I picked up the book because I know the author, but I recommend it because by the last 100 pages I could barely put it down, even though I had other pressing obligations to which to attend. Highly recommended to fans of light urban fantasy or coming-of-age stories.
Teen angst and "finding yourself" mixed with a bit of the supernatural, sprinkled with romance and a happy ending. I enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end and have added this author's name to my watch list!
Whisper, by Phoebe Kitanidis, is a psychologically-astute novel about the consequences of a fourteen year old girl's unusual gift for "hearing" other people's unspoken wishes and yearnings. As the novel opens, we learn that Joy Stefani uses her ability to hear wishes in order to please other people, but her older sister Jessica, wields her own similar gift like a sword to hurt and disturb others. Embarrassed by Jessica's inability to fit in, Joy wants to get as far from Jessica as possible. And then Joy's "hearing" starts acting up! Perhaps the gift is really a curse?
From an intriguing premise of paranormal flavor and metaphorical heft, the novel takes its readers on a realistic ride through the hearts of teenage girls growing up everywhere. On the way, Joy grapples with complex, human questions of love and empathy. The novel gains momentum and exhilarating speed. We're pulled toward a dark crash of a climax, before coming to a surprising and satisfying stopping point- I'm excited by the possibility of a sequel! Kitanidis's clear, witty prose and unerring ear for dialogue make this book a pleasure to read -- but it is the development of Joy's character from start to finish that truly makes this novel sing.
In Whisper, Kitanidis gives us a spellbinding and moving story for readers of any age. It has everything you could ask for.
All the things that the inner teen fears on steroids. When you just want to belong and fit in and you find the ones you think you have the least in common with turn out to be the ones you should hold closest. Never under estimate what someone else us able to comprehend
